Residents of La Graciosa have denounced the problem of cat colonies that keep growing in Caleta de Sebo. They have made this public through a press release in which they wanted to expose "the lack of decision-making" by public institutions.

In this statement, which La Voz has accessed, the residents of La Graciosa state that there has been a cat colony for years in the island's capital and that, in addition, most of them are not sterilized. "This situation generates desperation because both adults and young need to be fed and there are more and more."

The residents of La Graciosa have stated that they have already brought the matter to the Teguise City Council "for some time" and have proposed that sterilization be carried out as in the rest of the towns. According to their testimony, the council has responded that "since it is a Natural Park, where feline colonies are not authorized, if they are sterilized they cannot be returned later."

In addition, they have recalled that in the area of the island owned by the Spanish State, where the sanitation facilities or the transfer plant are located, "there are many feral cats that have attacked protected birds."

As an alternative, they have requested that a cattery be set up in La Graciosa, where they can be kept controlled and fed, but they have not given us an answer either."

Faced with this situation of silence, the residents of the Eighth Island have asked the institutions that, while it is decided what to do, they be helped to feed them, "since this situation has become unsustainable due to the high number of cats that make up the colony."
