Families from the island have contacted La Voz to report that the lack of teachers at the Insular Center for Musical Education (CIEM) in Lanzarote is forcing children to stay home because they cannot attend classes.
According to the families, "this situation is becoming increasingly common." "Children who have put all their enthusiasm into music and find themselves weeks on end without teachers for their instrument, ensemble, or music theory," they assure.
Although in recent years this center has greatly expanded its places and an investment has been allocated to improve facilities, "it is useless if our little ones have to stay home in the afternoons, that motivation with which they began the school year falling apart when they see that every time a position becomes vacant it cannot be filled because there are never substitutes."
"Being a public body for which we pay annual fees, we feel abandoned and unheard; we demand a solution," they state.
Thus, they argue that "music education is not a hobby or a secondary service; it requires continuity, rigor, and constant support."
Furthermore, they emphasize that this situation "is causing a stagnation in the learning and academic preparation of students, caused by a lack of institutional commitment."
"Dozens of families who believe in quality public education on the island feel helpless and disappointed. We believe that after years of these complaints, it is time for the Cabildo to immediately activate the employment pools or find some solution to this problem. We cannot allow administrative neglect to violate the right to music education for our students," they conclude.
