The sports offer of the municipality of Yaiza is broad-spectrum, not only because of the municipal sports schools program, twenty in total, where more than a thousand children and young people are trained, train and compete in the discipline of their preference, but also because of the catalog of inclusive, popular, professional and elite events that complement the government action aimed at promoting sports; no less than thirty events are hosted in the south of Lanzarote during 2025, proposals that were broken down by the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, and the Councilor for Sports, Ángel Lago, at the presentation of the sports calendar held last Friday at the Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas.
Apart from the scope that sport has in the entertainment, health and personal growth of people, regardless of age group, the mayor of Yaiza also highlighted "the impact of sporting events on tourism promotion and the local and island economy. Native sports, such as Latin sailing or Canarian wrestling, are also very present in our agenda."
Olympic athletes from different sailing classes prepare in Playa Blanca for five months for the most demanding competitions worldwide, choosing Marina Rubicón as their base port. The stay of European and other continental teams training and competing in the Playa Blanca regatta fields represents an impact of 37 million in various sectors of the island and Canarian economy, including contracting services and consumption in hospitality and restaurants, according to a economic impact report commissioned by Marina Rubicón.
There are tests organized directly by the City Council, others in collaboration with supramunicipal administrations and private entities and also subsidized, in any case, "a very complete calendar that reflects the affection that Yaiza professes for sports. Sport is health, it is enjoyment of physical activity and enjoyment of the landscape, one of the great values of our municipality," added Óscar Noda.
As a result of the experience and analysis of experiences inside and outside the Canary Islands, the Councilor for Sports, Ángel Lago, assured that "the municipality has been able to consolidate its sports calendar and we are very satisfied both by the trust that entities, clubs and federations place in us, as well as the response from athletes from Lanzarote and from anywhere in the world who do not hesitate to come to share and have a good time in Yaiza."
In April alone, Yaiza has the School Olympics on the 3rd and 4th with the participation of the southern educational community; the Magma Triathlon, on Saturday the 12th, a test that premieres on the calendar open to the participation of 400 triathletes in the sprint and Olympic categories; the Ajaches Children's Handball Tournament, from the 17th to the 20th; and on April 25 the IES Yaiza Triathlon, which celebrates 25 years.
In February, Playa Blanca hosted the Handbike International Lanzarote, valid for the Spanish Road Paracycling Cup, and after April, other events are coming up such as the Las Palmas Sports Union Football Campus, the Playas de Papagayo and La Bocaina swimming crossings, which connects Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Southern Latin Sailing Cup, the demanding Bestial Race obstacle course and other competitions "that place Yaiza at the top of island sport".
