The sailors of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife had a prominent role in the development of the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup, a competition held during the weekend in the town of Pollença, Mallorca. The westerly wind and continuous changes in direction marked the development of the three days of sailing. Unai de Ugarte proved to be one of the most consistent sailors, and his good performance on the race course allowed him to be proclaimed runner-up in the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup.
140 sailors participated in the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup, with the presence of the world champion and runner-up in the class being noteworthy. The Real Club Náutico de Arrecife had four sailors participating. Unai de Ugarte (Atlantis Academy), Mateo Roa (CACT Lanzarote), and Adriana Bravo de Laguna (Atlatis Academy) were part of the team from the Royal Canary Islands Sailing Federation. The expedition was completed with the participation of Fayna Tavío.
On the opening day, only one of the three scheduled races could be held. The shifting westerly wind, unusual in the area, tested the Race Committee in designing the race course in the bay of Pollença. With an intensity of 5 knots, the race started, with Unai de Ugarte saving the day by finishing in 19th position.
On Saturday morning, the northeast wind arrived with an intensity of 14 knots. Unai de Ugarte started the day with a fifth place and won the second and third races of the day, thus presenting the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife sailor's credentials to fight for the final podium.
Unai de Ugarte (Atlantis Academy) once again demonstrated his consistency on Sunday, adapting perfectly to the appearance of the westerly wind and a wind with continuous changes in direction. The Lanzarote sailor achieved a second and a third place on the final day, climbing to the second step of the podium and being proclaimed runner-up in the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup.
Mateo Roa (CACT Lanzarote) accessed the gold fleet of the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup, staging a great comeback on Saturday and being the third best Canarian in the competition. In the women's category, Adriana Bravo de Laguna (Atlantis Academy) and Fayna Tavío could not access the gold fleet and fought throughout the weekend to adapt to the adverse wind conditions.
The coach of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, Hugo Torres, was part of the technical team of the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation. "The west wind has made a difficult race course for our sailors, with left and right shifts and constant drops in intensity," explains the coach, highlighting the "level of the fleet with the presence of the world champion and runner-up in the ILCA 4 class."
The president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, Julio Romero, and the Board of Directors, wish to congratulate Unai de Ugarte for the excellent second place achieved in the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup, demonstrating once again his magnificent qualities for adapting to complicated sailing situations. Congratulations that they also extend to Mateo Roa, Adriana Bravo de Laguna, and Fayna Tavío, representing the club in one of the most important competitions on the national calendar.
