The Playa Dorada boat arrived with a three-point lead over the Tritón with two races left in the sixth edition of the Copa Vela Latina del Sur, held this Saturday in the bay of Playa Blanca, each with three windward legs, and although both races were very close, the Tritón, skippered by Cristian Sánchez, handled the wind changes better and finished third on the final day, a performance sufficient to win the title, surpassing by a single point the boat skippered by Aythami Quintana, who could not secure a privileged position, precisely on the day of the decider with ten boats competing.

The third step of the overall podium was secured by Gonzalo Morales' Bernasan, three points behind the Tritón. Therefore, the top three classified in this 2026 Cup are boats from Playa Blanca, the host town of the municipality of Yaiza, which, as a fishing village, celebrated the victory and its connection to the tradition of Latin sailing with great enthusiasm.

The sports family gathered at the La Aurora cultural center in Playa Blanca to socialize at the trophy presentation ceremony, presided over by the councilors for Sports and Citizen Security of Yaiza, Ángel Lago and Beatriz Vázquez, respectively. The trophy for the final day went to the Bernasan, which propelled it to third place overall, followed by the Playa Blanca and the champion Tritón.

The Playa Blanca, fourth in the overall standings, suffered the absence of its skipper Virginia Morales at the end of the first race of the day. Morales complained of pain in one of her hands after performing a maneuver and had to be evacuated to shore for medical attention. Joaquín Medina took over at the helm, a substitute crew member boarded the boat, and the Playa Blanca, overcoming difficulties, had a very good Cup. The grand finale of the Copa del Sur adorned the patron saint festivities of the Virgen del Carmen in Playa Blanca.

Eager for the title

The Tritón came with a strong record in the Copa del Sur and other prestigious regional competitions. It was the champion of the fourth edition held in 2024, the year in which it also won the Canary Islands Latin Sailing Championship in the Gran Canarian town of Arinaga, and runner-up in the Copa del Sur in 2025, surpassed by the Di Napoli boat from Fuerteventura. The Tritón regained the title, so the joy of its owner, Víctor García, and all its sailors is not surprising.

Playa Dorada was left with the honey on its lips. It lost the title on the last of the four days of the Cup, a complicated day with many alternations at the head of the race, but its result is equally noteworthy. The skipper of Bernasan admits that they started slowly, but they recovered positions and good feelings as the competition progressed. Perhaps, with one more day, they would have had a chance at the title because they felt strong and in rhythm.

The commitment of the Yaiza City Council is to maintain and improve the Copa del Sur, an absolutely consolidated and demanded competition by the fleets of boats from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The Cup started with less than ten boats and can now count up to seventeen registered. On behalf of Yaiza, councilman Ángel Lago thanks the Latin sailing family of Lanzarote, the boats and the fans of Playa Blanca, the Marina Rubicón sports port, and the island and regional federations for their clear support for this event where sportsmanship, tradition, and emotions converge.
