Puerto Calero was once again the scene of the great sport fishing event in Lanzarote with the XXXII Puerto Calero Marlin Cup, a tournament that this year will be remembered for its excitement and its historical figures: 16 bites and 7 blue marlins reported to control, within a total of 24 bites in the two days of competition, a very unusual record that confirms the spectacular nature of this edition.
The final day started strong. The boat Papichulo opened the day with the report of a blue marlin marked by the young Luis Eduardo Ferrer, who took the prize for the first young man to score. Just a couple of hours later, at 12:50, the Luyaira, captained by Carmelo Pérez, achieved its second marlin of the tournament and placed itself at the top of the classification with 1,000 points, becoming the big favorite to win.
However, the excitement had only just begun. The boat The Rodfather II, by Adrián Arcay, surprised with two decisive bites, the first at 13:26 and the second at 16:25, which raised its score to 1,500 points. This comeback allowed it to snatch the victory from Luyaira and win the title of champion of the XXXII Puerto Calero Marlin Cup. The third place went to the boat El Pichón, by Xerach Bernardo Lucas, who completed the podium after a very hard-fought tournament.
The prizes were up to the prestige of the tournament. The first classified received an annual insurance for recreational boat from Murimar Seguros, in addition to the registration to the Costa Rica World Cup and a travel bag of 3,000 euros. The second classified was awarded with 3,000 euros in fuel, courtesy of DISA, and a courtesy dry dock from Calero Marinas. For its part, the third classified, El Pichón de Xerach Bernardo Lucas, took a gift voucher of 2,500 euros in Simrad electronics, courtesy of Salitre Sport Fishing.
After the awards ceremony, participants and companions celebrated a lively dinner at the Amura restaurant, which culminated in a themed party dedicated to La Vieja Habana, putting the perfect finishing touch to an unforgettable edition.
The organization stressed that the high number of reported bites —24 in total during the two days of the tournament— is an exceptional fact that highlights the extraordinary richness of the waters of Lanzarote as a destination for deep-sea sport fishing.
