The Insular Federation of Latin Sail Barquillos of Lanzarote has announced in a press release issued this Wednesday that it has been forced to suspend all regattas and activities scheduled to be held from this September 3, "due to the lack of financial support from the Arrecife City Council, which has led to an unsustainable situation for the federative entity."
The president of the Insular Federation of Latin Sail Barquillos of Lanzarote, Juan Pérez, explains that “this decision is adopted due to the lack of financial support, a situation derived from the request by the Arrecife City Council to return an important part of the subsidy granted to this Federation in 2023 and due to the continuous obstacles we encounter when submitting a subsidy or sponsorship.”
According to the Federation, several meetings have been held with the Department of Sports of the Arrecife City Council, and the federative entity understood that the situation had been resolved. However, as of September 2, it has been verified that this is not the case. For the federative entity, this situation “implies a lack of commitment and support towards a vernacular sport as important as Latin sailing, which places us in an unsustainable position to continue developing the activity.”
As of this September 3, all scheduled events and regattas are suspended until the situation is resolved. The Insular Federation of Latin Sail Barquillos of Lanzarote apologizes “for the problems we may cause to all entities, sponsors, organizers, etc.”, remaining at the disposal of the assembly members, skippers, athletes and families of Latin sailing for any clarification or additional information.
The first consequence of this decision will affect the normal development of the Lanzarote La Isla Diferente 5-Meter Barquillos League, which was scheduled to celebrate the third day of the competition next Sunday, September 7, with a double regatta in the bay of Playa Blanca.
