Frederic Van Lierde with a time of 8 hours, 51 minutes and 16 seconds and Nikki Bartlett (9:59:10) were proclaimed this Saturday winners of the 'XXVIII Ironman Lanzarote' co-organized by Club La Santa and the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and which has had more than 1,600 participants.
The podium in the men's category was completed by the German Christian Kramer (8:56:08) and the Spaniard Aguayo Muñoz (9:00:55). In the women's category, the second position was for the Danish Maja Stage (10:03:41), while the Dutch Lenny Tamsey occupied the third position (10:10:48).
As usual, thousands of fans followed the route of the race that started at 7:00 a.m. from Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen with the swimming segment in which Emilio Aguayo made a good split, covering the 3.8 kilometers of the course in 49 minutes and 15 seconds, followed very closely by Van Lierde and Kramer, both with a time of 50:25.
In the cycling segment, Van Lierde, 39 years old and also winner five times of the Ironman of France, as well as third classified in the World Championship of 2012, imposed his greater experience on the bike using 5 hours, one minute and 32 seconds to pedal the 180 kilometers of the route. After being overtaken by Christian Kramer in the Marathon transition, the Belgian recovered the first place that he would not leave until the finish line.
Regarding the women, after making a time of 54 minutes and 55 seconds in the water, Maja Stage Nielsen was surpassed on the bicycle by Bartlett who would also not lose the first position in the three laps of the Marathon circuit between Playa Honda and the Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen.
More than 400 people have ensured the safety of the event. The security and control device of the event has had the participation of traffic agents of the Civil Guard, Local Police, as well as auxiliary volunteers, qualified and duly identified, who have been stationed at the intersections of the roads through which the event has passed.
Also participating were personnel from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, Civil Protection of the island's municipalities, the Salvamar patrol boat of the Government of the Canary Islands, Emerlan, Security and Emergencies of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, as well as personnel from the Cabildo de Lanzarote and Club La Santa.
