The Spanish men's artistic gymnastics team suffered a car accident while traveling to Anadia, Portugal, this Thursday, March 16, to compete in a bilateral tournament with the Portuguese team, as published by the Spanish Gymnastics Federation through its social networks.

"We are well and alive, which is the important thing. It could have ended much worse. We have been very lucky and we are fine, a little sore," explained the gymnast from Lanzarote of the Spanish national team, Ray Zapata, this Friday on the program 'Buenos días Lanzarote' of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero.

The athlete from Lanzarote explains that the wheel of the van in which the Spanish artistic gymnastics team was traveling burst. "The driver tried to keep the van straight and, from one moment to another, it began to lean, to become horizontal to the road. And that's when we started to roll over quite a few times. The only thing we could do was hold on as tightly as possible and wait for it all to stop," says Zapata.

"When we stopped, we all looked at each other to see that we were all okay. And well, we are quite well for what has happened. My teammate Joel Plata has suffered a fracture in his femur and underwent emergency surgery last night and the operation went super well. And Néstor Abad has a small deviation in the nasal septum, but well, he is quite well. The others are with bruises, one with a blow to the rib and another to the leg and buttock," concludes the gymnast from Lanzarote.
