The Yaiza City Council celebrates the success of the first edition of the Yaiza Extremo Sur, a race that concluded with the participation of 200 MTB and Trail runners this weekend, the latter with two distances, 13 and 21 km. The event organizers highlight the "great behavior of the runners who have respected the rules to which they were subject due to Covid restrictions."

The winners of the main race, the first to complete the 21 km route through the spectacular landscapes of our municipality, were local runner Albi Cedrés, who took 1 hour, 30 minutes and 53 seconds, and Tessa Kortekaas, who took first place in the women's category with a time of 2:10:21, in addition to achieving the double with her victory in MTB, taking 2 hours, 23 minutes and 56 seconds for the 45 kilometers of the mountain bike segment. For his part, Aitor Navarro climbed to the top of the podium in the trail starter (13 km) with a record of 58:03, in addition to being proclaimed runner-up in the 21 km trail. In the women's category of 13 km it was Nuria Muñoz (1:21:26) who took the prize and in the MTB mode the winner was Samuel Rodríguez, who stopped the clock in 1 hour, 51 minutes and 27 seconds.

"The Yaiza Extremo Sur has been a true revolution in terms of holding sporting events in a pandemic period, demonstrating that if you want to, you can. We wanted to end this year with a positive mentality in sports and close it with a test that has been liked and that has been extraordinarily safe," highlights the Councilor for Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago.

"From the City Council we wanted to bet on holding sporting events that motivate athletes from Lanzarote and the Canary Islands and we already have evidence from other islands that are looking at this example of Yaiza. All this work of authorizations and organization has gone ahead thanks to our Councilor for Sports, as well as staff from the area he directs and others such as Civil Protection, Local Police, the Red Cross and Gorec NGOs, as well as the security and emergency company Vulkano," says Mayor Óscar Noda.

Both Noda and Lago are very satisfied with the result of the test and leave open the possibility for future editions of the Yaiza Extremo Sur, the first test of these characteristics that is carried out in person in the middle of a pandemic and that has been saved with great success despite the difficulties of the moment. More than 40 troops have participated during the three days of competition in the security device of this test that has had 200 registered and has been developed without accidents, avoiding activating the emergency device.
