Adapted sport was the main protagonist of Sunday's event in Playa Blanca (Yaiza), with a new edition of the Playa Blanca Handbike Race. A leading event at European level, unique in the old continent and which brings together the best disabled athletes every year. One more example of the overcoming of people with some type of physical disability and who have in sport a way of life and overcoming. Everyone can be considered a winner in the handbike race held on Sunday morning, receiving the applause of the hundreds of fans who followed the Playa Blanca Handbike Race from some point along the route.
The VI Playa Blanca Handbike Race was attended by 48 handbikers representing almost fifteen different nationalities. A race that took place on the urban circuit of Playa Blanca and was supported by hundreds of visitors. Tourists were surprised by the spectacular nature of this sport and crowded especially in the Los Limones curve to applaud the participants. The mayoress of Yaiza, Gladys Acuña, and the councillor for Sports of the Yaiza Town Hall, Omaira Umpiérrez, were in charge of giving the starting signal to the VI Playa Blanca Handbike Race.
The "Purple" team was the winner of the VI Playa Blanca Handbike Race, completing a total of 16 laps of the urban course of the race. The team was made up of Christiansen Kim (Denmark), Cedric Kuster (Switzerland), Ivan Van de Vyvere (Belgium) and Jonas Van de Steene (Belgium). The "Purple" team completed the fastest lap of the race with a time of 3 minutes and 45 seconds.
The remaining places on the podium were contested by three teams that completed a total of 14 laps of the course. Second place went to the "Black and White" team composed of Yannick Melon (Belgium), Didier Damiens (Belgium), Torsten Purschke (Germany) and Ziga Breznick (Slovenia). And the third position was for the "Black" team composed of Winni Sigg (Germany), Sandra Stockli (Switzerland) and Mark Van Extergem (Belgium).
After an hour of effort, the participants of the VI Playa Blanca Handbike Race were entertained at the finish line and the trophy presentation took place. An event in which the effort made by all of them was valued, thanking them for the great promotion they make of this unique sporting event in their countries of origin and that make Lanzarote the preferred destination for the practice of adapted sports.
