The Lanzarote Sports City will remain closed for at least another week. The company that has placed the new turf on the soccer field has committed an error, detected by the Spanish Football Federation, which must be corrected before this facility is reopened. The Minister of Sports of the Cabildo, Migdalia Machín, has explained that the problem has arisen in the areas of the field, where some lines have been painted "longer than normal".
This work should have been delivered in September, but there have been "many problems of understanding" between the technicians of the Cabildo and the awarding company. "The problems were that the specifications, each one interpreted it in a different way in technical matters", the minister pointed out.
After solving these problems, the Spanish Football Federation demanded a series of analyses of the turf before delivering the work on the soccer field, a usual requirement. "These tests are done by an Institute of Valencia, which came to do them on site and also in the laboratory", explained Migdalia Machín. After this procedure, the Federation had to measure the field as the last step to be able to reopen the facility. And this is where the problem arose.
"The areas are longer than normal. In other words, the problem is not in the turf but in how it has been marked", Machín indicated, who assured that the company awarded the works, which "has a tremendous experience in setting up soccer fields", has assumed "its error", so it will try to solve it next week.
"The field will have to be closed for another week", admitted the minister, who pointed out that the match between UD Lanzarote and Unión Sur Yaiza will have to be played in the Municipal Stadium of Tías.
The minister has recognized that this situation is "surreal" and that nobody could imagine that the "lines were not well placed".
