Why do I want to be your president?

May 26 2023 (17:32 WEST)

I could get lost in a string of more or less hackneyed answers due to the use that public officials make of them when we expose our motivations when leading a candidacy to one institution or another. And although I could fall into them again, with what I have lived and learned in these years, the answer is very simple: because Lanzarote needs and deserves a presidency of the Popular Party.

It is not a "just because" without further ado, empty or free. No. I am convinced that a presidency of the Popular Party would undoubtedly be a great opportunity for our island. As governors, the men and women of the Popular Party have demonstrated to the citizens of the island that we are good managers. Honest, brave, rigorous and efficient. Essential values to face, from the responsibility of the presidency, the great pending issues and the new future challenges that we have as a society and as an island.

During the last 20 years, PSOE and CC have co-governed in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, with both parties alternating in the presidency of the institution. Socialists and nationalists, nationalists and socialists, have been the ones who have marked the island policy of the last two decades and are therefore responsible for the burden that having a completely obsolete and outdated planning instrument that does not respond to current needs and that is proving to be a burden on our present represents for the economic and social development of the island. Despite this, it is not surprising that some defend the full validity of the 1991 Plan in order not to recognize its failure and its terrible management.

Both, nationalists and socialists, share in their backpacks the weight of this failure, as well as the fact that, in 2023, Lanzarote is the only island that does not have a high-demand socio-health care center for our elderly and dependent people due to their lack of foresight, but above all, due to their lack of action. They are also responsible for depriving our young people of their right to pursue university studies on their own island if they so wish. The fact that we still do not have a Conference Center. These last infrastructures were promoted by the Popular Party when it has had government responsibilities, but socialists and nationalists have let them die to later reappear as the great promoters, forgetting that they are the main responsible for the infrastructure deficit that we are dragging.

Some and others have brought us here, parking at every moment what, for partisan reasons, has not interested them. We, the councilors of the Popular Party, have been able to do little from the areas we have managed in an eminently presidential Cabildo. And even so, we have not stopped trying, even at the risk of it costing us our permanence in the government, as has precisely happened in this mandate, in which our good management and growing prominence was not liked at all.

Now is the time. The answer to present and future challenges involves greater involvement of each and every one of the citizens who live on the island. If we want different results, it is time to change the usual protagonists because, let no one be fooled, what they have not done in twenty years they are not going to do now.

This May 28 we have the opportunity to change things, to avoid the same mistakes that have been made for more than two decades and we can only achieve this with a strong Popular Party at the head of the presidency of the Cabildo.

Once again, the men and women of the Popular Party are willing to take on the challenge. We have the experience and the necessary drive to lead a new political stage away from permanent confrontation, empty speeches and false debates. Let's make Lanzarote and La Graciosa the true protagonists of their development. Together, change is possible. Choose to move forward!
