Remembering why I am in politics, I cannot find the specific moment of my involvement. What I am sure of is the tremendous pride it is to work for others, and this is the best way to give back what society has allowed you to be.
And there I am, trying to give back everything that my land and the people with whom I have shared my life have given me, trying to improve the conditions of the community in which I live from my status as a citizen because, as the famous jurist Louis Brandeis says: "In a democracy, the most important political office is that of being a citizen." And I am, a citizen of Haría, a citizen of Lanzarote.
I have stepped forward to run in these elections because I am convinced that the island deserves a nationalist senator, an independent senator, a senator who represents us all without exception, a senator who only listens to the people of Lanzarote, a senator away from the media noise, a senator with common sense, a senator of the citizens of this island: those from here, all their lives, and those who have decided to project their lives and that of their family in our land.
We cannot always wait for others to do things, the best way to achieve those goals is simply by doing it yourself, running in the elections and getting involved in the political life of the island. In this sense, I embrace the saying that says "don't wait for someone to come and change the world, change it yourself with the example".
In less than twenty days, the Senate elections will be held and we have a democratic opportunity to make the necessary changes in politics, in institutions and in governments to restore the prominence of citizens in decisions, in participation, in transparency, in public ethics, in social justice, in economic recovery. We have the opportunity to become active and responsible citizens again.
I appeal to Politics with capital letters, to move away from the sterile partisan debates that only lead us to a disaffection of the people for politics. As our great teacher César Manrique said, "having a great truth in our hands, we only need the courageous decision to carry it out".
And that is my decision, to run for the Senate to be the senator of all the people of Lanzarote, to act in Madrid as the amplifier of the island, as a loudspeaker for the requests of my people.
The island, now more than ever, needs its own vision, with the courage to fight for it. Now more than ever, we must look to those politicians who defended the insular fact and thanks to whom today we have tools in our laws to alleviate the costs of double insularity.
We cannot forget the work of a leading senator for Lanzarote such as Rafael Stinga, who was able to build, together with other politicians from non-capital islands, the foundations of what is today the insular fact, significantly contributing to the concept of triple parity and its translation into balance and solidarity between the islands.
Following that already marked line, I believe that I can contribute to the island of Lanzarote my firm will to work and fight for this land that has given me so much and that I love so much.
I am Marci Acuña and I am running for senator for the island of Lanzarote
