"Tenerife, Tenerife" or why the ecological cost should come before the economic cost.

August 27 2023 (15:52 WEST)

Does anyone really think that the laws of nature understand politics?

Does anyone really think that if the territory could vote, would it vote for the model we have chosen to live in and of which we have all been accomplices?

Does anyone still believe that acting unilaterally without taking into account as a basis "what nature and the ecosystem itself would vote for" and respecting that before our own interests WILL HAVE ANY KIND OF FUTURE?

Why hasn't the nature of Candelaria been venerated like the Virgin of Candelaria a few days ago?

It is that, literally, nature itself is the only thing that can make it possible for humanity to continue for centuries and centuries. Without the Amen, but loving each other very much.

I don't dare to say that this is the fault of mass tourism and the model from which we have all lived to a greater or lesser extent... because we must obviously reformulate and diversify the economy if we don't want to starve in a territory like this.

However, I do think that the model that the Canary Islands has promoted during the last decades is not compatible with its territory, at least not at present, and much less does that model adapt to the challenges of the future.

The ambition of the numbers has gotten out of hand. Those headlines of: "New record of millions of tourists" as if it were the greatest of achievements, has undoubtedly left its mark on the territory. As my admired friend Ana Carrasco says, ecosystems are broken by human action. They become fragile and more vulnerable. If you take a stone from an environment without intending to, you are breaking an ecosystem and making it more vulnerable than it already is.

If you put millions of people in a territory that is not prepared for that load... it is undeniable that 2+2 is 4.

That said, here is my reflection...

Sustainability, the 2030 Agenda, the SDGs, respect for the environment, not continuing to build without measure and without taking into account the territory and its fragility... are not things of the left or the right, they are things of the entire WORLD.

Basically, so that we can continue living a little longer and especially so that this land that we all say we love so much (whether you are from the right, the left, nationalist, center or whatever) can have continuity.

Only when it is understood that this is not an ideological issue but one of COMMON SENSE will we solve the great territorial problems we have.

Only when we understand that the ecological cost must prevail over the economic cost, THERE WILL BE A FUTURE.
