For more than a week, and still today, Calle Ferraz has witnessed some of the most shameful scenes our democracy has seen. Let it be clear that the right to demonstrate is free and must always be, regardless of the ideological thinking of each individual.
Although it is also true that violence, insults, and fascist or xenophobic demonstrations promoted by ultra groups encouraged by the Spanish right, which has lost its mind and disqualifies institutions they considered their own, such as the monarchy, cannot be tolerated.
Yesterday, we could hear them referring to socialist women through inflatable dolls, shouting "whores." Unfortunately, over the years, we have become accustomed to seeing how disqualification has become the daily bread in public institutions, those that some of their members do not have the slightest dignity to represent. And believe me when I say that amnesty is not the main problem for a right-wing that still does not accept not being in power, even though the polls say otherwise.
And for me, being a socialist is very different from what these protesters refer to. It means protecting all those women who are victims of the macho scourge that some still deny. It means giving visibility and providing solutions to the problems of the most vulnerable groups and people. It also refers to improving the working conditions of the workers of this country, improving the quality of life and the work-life balance of Spaniards. Yes, this unity seems more important to me than the one proclaimed by those who seize a flag that belongs to everyone. And not because Spain is going to break up, as they claimed when pardons were granted. It doesn't seem so serious when Aznar did it with more than 1,400 people, who, in that case, did include terrorists from organizations that were still active. Do you remember?
Being a socialist means taking care of our planet and acting against climate change before it is irreversible for future generations. It is also believing in our young people and giving them opportunities to grow and develop talent in Spain, without having to resort to leaving the country due to lack of opportunities. It already happened when the Popular Party governed. Do you remember?
And that is what destroyed our country, and these groups, who are up in arms about a break-up that will never exist, cared little. There are many more reasons why I am proud to be a socialist, but be clear that they are not going to stop us. Only the polls can decide the moment of change.
And it hasn't arrived.
I conclude with a reflection: What would happen if this type of demonstration with Nazi symbols were held in Germany? Spain is not like that, and with the confidence that the polls placed in us, we will continue building the progressive Spain that we are proud of.
