One more year, 37 fewer women

November 24 2021 (12:35 WET)

We face the end of another year, with its world events, its advances in the achievement of rights, its dramatic realities... With a pandemic virus that refuses to go down in history, several bloody wars and rivers of people fleeing, who are turned away between fear and hatred. Also with international meetings in search of consensus, in search of paths, in search of an opportunity for the generations that come to inhabit the planet after the current ones.

Another year, this 2021, in which women of all ages, origins and circumstances have been murdered in Spain by their partners or ex-partners, in fits of anger or in crimes reviewed down to the smallest detail. 37 women and 24 minors: for a mother, vicarious violence exerted against offspring is even more painful than her own wounds and they know it.

Awareness campaigns, specific and forceful legislation, millionaire investments, education in values, demonstrations, help lines, purple points... nothing seems to be enough to stop this barbarity, which blurs some men from their human condition and turns them into resentful and vengeful monsters.

Much remains to be done, such as understanding that the abuse of power and the conviction of personal superiority are hidden behind each slap, each push and each stab that a man inflicts on someone he considers inferior, disobedient, incapable. Dismantling the patriarchal system and replacing it with an egalitarian model is, therefore, the great social challenge to end femicides.

And without a doubt, this requires dismantling the patriarchal foundations block by block: the blatant inequality of female presence in the places where decisions that concern us are made, discrimination in access to the labor market and in the perception of remuneration, the assumption of family care exclusively, which limits or makes personal and professional development impossible, the dissemination of pornography that victimizes and hypersexualizes us, the defense of the prostitution system as a free labor exercise and not as a millionaire industry with human trafficking and alienation as fuel.

Or what is the same, build the ladder that, step by step, takes us out of submission and the impotent acceptance of injustice and allows us, all of us and not just a privileged few, to be and act as free and capable citizens, in a society of equals.
