The staff responsible for the gardens of the municipality of Yaiza participated this week in a theoretical - practical training course in Elche on palm management, plant health, structural diagnosis and maintenance, taught to technicians and operators from different entities by the agricultural technical engineer and phytosanitary advisor who provides consulting services to public administrations and private companies inside and outside of Spain, José Javier Sigüenza.
The Councilor for Parks and Gardens of Yaiza, Rubén Arca, points out that "as we have always done, we are willing to transfer this experience on the integral control of pests and maintenance of palm trees to other municipalities of the Island and to the Cabildo, since the fight against the weevil is a joint work and commitment of all institutions." Arca was in Elche in the company of the Yaiza Environment technician and two municipal operators.
"Yaiza developed with its own resources a pilot test of low-pressure endotherapy on 300 palm trees in the municipality to protect the plant species from diocalandra frumenti and thus control the expansion of this harmful beetle popularly known as weevil that affects half of the palm grove of Lanzarote. The southern City Council was the first Institution on the island to take actions through said treatment in several phases that consists of injecting phytosanitary product into the trunk of the palm tree to kill the insect causing its destruction," they point out from the Consistory.
Rubén Arca describes as "very productive the training given the trajectory of the technician José Javier Sigüenza who is currently an advisor to the City Council of Elche to combat the red palm weevil managing the quarantine pests of the Palmeral of Elche, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco." The southern delegation also values the practices taught by the Elche palm grower Antonio Brotons, recognized for the exercise of his work and contributions in the conservation of palm trees.
