The Yaiza City Council presented its allegations to the draft document of the Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN) of the Volcanes Natural Park on September 30, submitted to a public information and consultation process by the Lanzarote Cabildo, essentially requesting to redefine the protection area in its southern area up to the LZ-2 "in the section of road that runs through the area of influence of the Yaiza nucleus because pre-existing uses, as well as infrastructures and equipment present in this space, are not currently recognized".
Yaiza not only advocates for the Yaiza health center, the municipal mortuary, the soccer field and the multi-purpose building attached to the sports facility, realities also recognized by the island's Cabildo, but also focuses on the homes of residents and other activities carried out in the strip of land located between the road and the town that has been the object of transformation.
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, is confident that "the Cabildo will consider our proposal adjusted to reality, because it is more than evident that the reference land does not meet the conditions for its protection as a result of the influence exerted by the road since its construction. We wanted to improve the soccer field by placing a low-impact pergola for shade in the main grandstand or paving streets in the affected area, and we couldn't. However, outside these limits, we do not dispute in any case the protection that a protected space of very high environmental value, a heritage of Lanzarote, must maintain."
Yaiza argues in its technical report that the LZ-2 road acts today as the southern boundary of the Volcanes Natural Park, "due to the influence it exerts on the territory and ecosystems, constituting a physical barrier that does not allow movements, as well as the dispersion of populations of flora and fauna for the maintenance of flows on both sides of the road." The PORN has among its mission to establish the structural organization that allows progress towards the construction of a sustainable management model in the area of protection with respect to the possible use and exploitation of the natural resources present.
