The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, together with the councilor delegate of the camel sector, will hold a telematic meeting this Thursday with the Deputy Minister for the Fight against Climate Change and Ecological Transition, Miguel Ángel Pérez, to discuss the upward revision of camel ride rates in Timanfaya.

“The revision is duly supported by economic studies, and the current rate of 12 euros per trip, which is only 6 euros per person, has not been revised for thirteen years, while the maintenance costs of the animals continue to increase," defends the mayor. Thus, he considers that the rate should rise "at least" to 20 euros per trip. This would mean an increase of 8 euros compared to the current price, or what is the same, it would cost ten euros per person.

“The objective of the rate review is to preserve a sustainable economic activity linked to tourism, from which nearly 40 families in Uga live and also generate employment," adds Noda.

From the Yaiza City Council they point out that the Cabildo of Lanzarote has “full knowledge of this concern”, since they assure that last November the camel sector and the City Council “registered a letter to the president, Dolores Corujo, reporting the need to revise the rates upwards”. They point out from the Consistory that the revision involves the convocation of the Timanfaya Board of Trustees, a National Park whose management and conservation is the responsibility of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.

Yaiza considers that, having appointed the new director of the Park last October, "there is no reason not to convene the Board of Trustees and study there all the proposals to improve the camel ride service in Timanfaya."
