The Yaiza City Council approved this Tuesday in Plenary a modification of the current budget by means of an extraordinary credit, with a favorable report from the Intervention, which guarantees two items totaling 35,000 euros destined to reinforce the municipal program of promotion of culture.

One of the projects, in the field of dance, as a performing art and creative space open to reflection, and another initiative to disseminate cinema that transcends entertainment, since, in addition, it has a heritage aspect focused on the recovery of audiovisual memory and another dedicated to bringing quality cinema to children between three and nine years of age. The proposal passed with the votes in favor of Unidos por Yaiza, the abstention of CC, Yas and PSOE and the vote against of the PP.

Óscar Noda, mayor of Yaiza, maintains that "our objective is to expand the initiatives for the dissemination of the arts by promoting the participation of audiences of different tastes and ages." However, the southern leader misses "greater investment from the Canary Islands in Culture. In February of last year I met in Yaiza with the councilor Migdalia Machín and she promised to support municipal performing arts projects, but that commitment has not yet materialized."

The Councilor for Culture of Yaiza, César Rijo, highlights that "the municipality demonstrates its taste for theater and other artistic expressions, the public responds to works in conventional spaces and street theater, but is also interested in interpretation workshops such as the one we are doing with the director Salvador Leal."

One of the two nominated subsidies that Yaiza has just approved will be to ensure the continuity of the Traslación Dance Festival that already left a very good impression last year. It is an itinerant cultural event with a stop in Yaiza that hosts dance shows performed by professional companies in landscapes of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. The program includes three sessions in the south of the Island, two in Playa Blanca and Femés, in addition to training workshops.

The other subsidy is aimed at guaranteeing three activities promoted by Tenique Cultural: Destiladera 2025, which projects old domestic films, some of them rescued from warehouses, storage rooms or trunks that represent a part of the audiovisual memory of Yaiza and Lanzarote, a proven research project.

Another activity is the Summer Traveling Cinema, with two sessions that the town of Uga has already hosted, entertaining films that encourage reflection and the critical spirit of the spectators. The project also includes Cinema for chinijos, a cycle of children's films with films carefully selected for their aesthetic and ethical value, far from the excess of stimuli and violence present in a large part of current children's audiovisual content.

Support in the social field

In another line of action for citizen well-being, Yaiza also approved another subsidy of 8,000 euros destined to the El Ático de la Abuela Association, a non-profit entity that is dedicated to helping and alleviating the needs of vulnerable families by providing them with basic necessities, working closely with the Administration. "Yaiza especially highlights its work during the pandemic and post-pandemic and the fluid coordination it maintains with the Social Services Area," they conclude from the City Council.
