The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Housing Institute (ICAVI), directed by Pino de León, has initiated the administrative file to accept the transfer of ownership of 42 homes located in Playa Blanca, in the municipality of Yaiza, which will become part of the public housing stock of the Canary Islands and will be allocated to affordable rental.
The action is part of the specific cooperation agreement signed between the ICAVI and the Island Council of Lanzarote and La Graciosa to increase the public housing supply on the island. In this regard, the Island Council has assumed the acquisition of the development, with co-financing from the Canary Housing Institute, to subsequently proceed with the transfer of ownership of the properties to the body of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The director of the Canary Housing Institute, Pino de León, has highlighted that "the incorporation of these 42 homes represents an important step to continue expanding the public stock of the Canary Islands and, especially, to make available to families in Lanzarote a new offer of affordable rental housing." In this regard, she has stressed that "collaboration between administrations is fundamental to mobilize resources, take advantage of available housing, and provide a faster response to people who have greater difficulties accessing housing at market prices."
For his part, the Minister of Housing of the Island Council of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, has pointed out that "the objective now is to complete the pending procedures with the greatest possible agility so that these 42 homes can reach the families who need them as soon as possible." "The Island Council acquired this development and completed its transfer to the ICAVI to make already built homes available for affordable rental. Each step we take brings us closer to their effective allocation, and that is now the priority," he added.
A development of 42 homes in Playa Blanca
The action includes 42 attached single-family homes located in the Montaña Roja Urbanization in Playa Blanca. In total, the development has 4,016.72 square meters of useful housing space, in addition to the areas designated for garages and the common elements of the development.
The acquisition of the development was contemplated in the specific agreement signed in 2024, which established an estimated investment of 9.38 million euros. The agreement articulated joint financing between both administrations, with a contribution of more than 6 million euros by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa and 3 million euros by the ICAVI.
Award for applicants of protected housing
The homes will be allocated for affordable rent and their award will be made among individuals or cohabiting units registered in the Public Registry of Applicants for Protected Housing in the Canary Islands, in accordance with the procedure established in the agreement and current regulations.
Once the homes have been formally incorporated into the public housing stock of the ICAVI, the corresponding award procedure will be published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), from which point individuals registered in the Public Registry of Applicants for Protected Housing in the Canary Islands who meet the established requirements will be able to apply for these homes.
The specific award system provided also establishes preferential attention to individuals residing or working in Yaiza and, where applicable, in neighboring municipalities, provided they meet the established requirements.
The procedure includes 23 homes, 55% of the development, reserved for special quotas, while the remaining 19, 45%, are allocated to the general quota. Special quotas include individuals with limitations, reduced mobility or communication; individuals up to 35 years of age; individuals 65 years of age or older; and victims of gender-based violence.
To access these homes, it will be necessary, among other requirements, to be registered in the Public Registry of Applicants for Protected Housing in the Canary Islands, meet the established income limits, and not own another home, with the exceptions contemplated in the regulations. The procedure will also take into account circumstances such as economic situation, housing need, the composition of the cohabiting unit, or length of residence in the municipality.
