The Cabildo of Lanzarote announces that work has already begun on the installation of the four wind turbines of the new Wind Farm in San Bartolomé, located in the area known as El Monte, next to Zonzamas, and which will produce 9.2 megawatts of power, essential to guarantee the energy security of the island.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, visited the area this Monday accompanied by the Minister of Wind Energy, Domingo Cejas, as well as several technicians and engineers, both from the island's Cabildo and from the concessionaire company Elecnor. "After managing to unblock the administrative procedures that prevented the start of these works since the last legislature," says Betancort, "in just 10 months we have managed to correct the deficiencies and begin with the execution of this new wind farm in Lanzarote, complying with the criteria imposed by the regional Executive and also respecting the nesting periods of the birds in this area."
"This is," adds the president, "a very important infrastructure that will allow our island to have 20% more renewable energy. In addition, our firm commitment is to continue advancing on the path of implementing clean energy, because Lanzarote must continue to be a benchmark for sustainability and respect for our environment."
For his part, the Minister of Wind Energy, Domingo Cejas, was very satisfied with the start of these works, which had been blocked since the last term "since the previous Government group tendered it without the favorable report from the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands."
"Today the beginning of these works is a reality," says the Minister, who advances that "after the earthworks and excavations for the foundations of the wind turbines, possibly in mid-June we can begin with the formwork of the first mill."
"Predictably, and taking into account the months of less wind, in September or October," continues Domingo Cejas, "we can begin the assembly of the four wind turbines that will represent an important advance in terms of renewable energy for our island."
Performance of the new wind farm
The new wind farm for grid dumping, which has involved an investment of close to 13 million euros, co-financed with FDCAN funds, will have 4 wind turbines of German manufacture and a total nominal power of 9.2 MW. This park will be able to produce, at full capacity, up to 27,138 megawatt hours per year, which would generate a minimum annual benefit of 1.5 million euros.
According to technicians, this new wind farm can provide energy to desalinate the water consumed by 128,000 people per year, so it will be able to avoid the emission of 11,700 tons of carbon dioxide per year. In this way, Lanzarote continues to advance in the change of energy model with the aim of minimizing dependence on fossil fuels.
