The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, has stated this Wednesday that the regional Executive "categorically rejects surveys in Canarian waters", although he has clarified that those that Morocco intends to initiate are in “Moroccan waters, neither Canarian nor Saharawi.” "Some have been approved months ago and others years ago," the president explained.
“Being the property of the Kingdom of Morocco, we have to appeal for international legality and environmental safety to be complied with,” Torres declared before the media.
On the other hand, he described as “good” that a “normalized” relationship exists between Spain and Morocco. “That helps greater security between commercial relations and between agreements between both countries, including the migratory flow, and that there are no unilateral decisions, and that situations are resolved between negotiating tables,” he added.
“This has been arbitrated today with the presence of the Government of the Canary Islands, because it will always be present in any negotiation between Spain and Morocco, in what has to do with the Canarian waters,” the president pointed out.
Torres emphasized that they will not allow “a millimeter of the Canarian waters” to be touched. “Morocco approved two laws in its parliament that had no course. International and European justice say that the waters are subject to the jurisdiction of international legality. It is not valid for any country to take water from any place for itself. That's why we're not worried,” he sentenced.
