The Sculpture of Fertility, one of César Manrique's most emblematic creations, returns to its place in the Farmer's House Museum, following the completion of a meticulous restoration process carried out by the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of Lanzarote.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has highlighted the importance of this rehabilitation, noting that "this project is an example of the new management model that we are implementing in the Tourist Centers, a model based on enhancing our heritage under the premise that less is more. We aspire to efficient, sustainable and respectful management with César Manrique's vision, ensuring that his spaces continue to be cultural and artistic references of our island."

For his part, the councilor of the Tourist Centers, Ángel Vázquez, has emphasized the technical and human work that has made the restoration possible: "This project has been a challenge that we have faced with the utmost respect for Manrique's original work. Thanks to the effort and dedication of all the professionals involved, we have not only managed to recover the sculpture, but also to reinforce its stability and long-term conservation."

A complex and precise technical restoration process

The sculpture, 15 meters high, originally composed of water tanks and elements of disused boats, suffered significant structural damage after a windstorm in April 2024. Its restoration has been carried out under the guidelines of a specialized technical report, which determined the need to reproduce some unrecoverable pieces with complete fidelity, reinforcing them internally to improve their stability and applying an anti-corrosion treatment to ensure their durability.

The work has been carried out by technical teams from the Tourist Centers, in coordination with companies specialized in restoration and treatment of materials. In addition, the process has been supervised at all times by the César Manrique Foundation, ensuring absolute respect for the design and essence of the work.

Improvements implemented in the restoration

  • Structural reinforcement of the most vulnerable elements to improve their resistance to inclement weather.

  • Advanced anti-corrosion treatment to prevent wear and tear over time and exposure to extreme conditions.

  • Assembly with updated techniques that ensure greater stability and conservation of the work.

  • Constant technical supervision, ensuring that each phase of the process met heritage conservation standards.

Commitment to preserving Manrique's legacy

With this restoration, the Tourist Centers "reaffirm their commitment to preserving the legacy of César Manrique, ensuring that his work continues to be part of the cultural landscape of Lanzarote with the best conditions of preservation."

The reopening ceremony has also served to publicly recognize the effort of all the workers who have participated in this process. "Today, Lanzarote recovers a symbol of its identity, and it does so thanks to the talent and dedication of a great team of professionals," concluded Ángel Vázquez.
