The general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, has offered this Wednesday morning a harsh press conference to denounce "the total violation of the security and dignity" of people who are in a situation of dependency in Lanzarote. Specifically, she has made public the conditions in which the Tías elderly residence would be found, managed by the Amavir company.
"It has shrunk our soul, we would not hold this press conference if it weren't because we have documentation," Corujo began. The socialist has highlighted that on the island "a model of precariousness is consolidating, quality standards are low."
Lack of staff
The deputy has highlighted that it is the "superhuman effort of the workers" that is sustaining the care for the elderly given the lack of staff.
"A staff under minimums has been normalized," she added. Corujo has reported that, on occasion, a single professional has had to attend to 40 people in a shift change and that, therefore, "attention ceases to be immediate".
Furthermore, it has warned that the elderly sometimes go to bed "late at night", because there is not enough staff. At the same time, it has warned that allegedly the hiring of unqualified personnel in healthcare is being carried out and that even so they are supplying medication to the elderly.
Thus, has exposed the absence of medical coverage. "There is only one doctor who provides service exclusively, who when on sick leave or vacation is not replaced," has pointed out. Therefore, there are periods where there would be no immediate medical supervision.
"We are talking about something extremely serious," he/she has warned, at the same time that he/she has highlighted that the Cabildo de Lanzarote would not be supervising the contributions of the workers.
"They are demanding functions from them that do not correspond to them, it is not recklessness, it is negligence that can have irreversible consequences," has pointed out the also socialist councilor in the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
The group in the opposition has informed that the complaints reach them from the workers, from the works council and from the relatives themselves who have their elders housed in this space.
"The Cabildo knows what is happening," Corujo has asserted, who has warned that this situation has "become chronic" over time.
Lack of material
The socialist has added that there are also problems with the center's material. "There are no towels, nor sheets and the mattresses are changed," she has assured.
At the same time that he has denounced that there have been "outbreaks of scabies that have failed to comply with health safety protocols", that there are adapted buses that do not have seat belts and elderly people who have escaped from the space.
