The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote is going to inquire about the acquisition of the shelter for victims of gender violence, initiated by the government of Loli Corujo. The previous Executive started the procedures, pending to resolve the difference in cadastral data, a procedure that should not have been delayed for more than a month.

“The Cabildo has had this resource on a rental basis for more than 10 years, which has provided and provides an indispensable service and which is essential to guarantee the protection of women, girls and boys affected by male violence. In the toughest times, it has housed up to 23 people who are desperately trying to escape an abusive environment and rebuild their lives.

In addition to consolidating the service, another of the objectives for its acquisition was to improve the habitability conditions of the same and provide a better service,” says Isabel Martín, councilor of the Socialist Group and former councilor of Social Welfare in the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

The socialist councilor insists on the “necessary urgency” that the current government group must have, justified by the regrettable figures of victims on the island. “Lanzarote is the third Canary Island with the most calls for gender violence, 125 in the last month, a figure that unfortunately grows with respect to the previous data, with physical violence being the most frequent reason for alerting the Service for Attention to Women Victims of Violence,” she indicates.

Likewise, the Socialist Group has lamented the “lack of responsibility and political will” of the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party at the head of the regional government, in which they have proposed an “alarming cut” of 450,000 euros in the Social Emergency Funds destined for women victims of gender violence, fundamental for the support and protection of women in situations of maximum vulnerability.

“We hope that the position on such a damaging structural problem is not the same in the Cabildo of Lanzarote,” concludes Martín.
