The councilwoman and spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Yaiza City Council, Carmen Guadalupe, has expressed her "consternation" after the government group of the Yaiza City Council has "destroyed" part of the church square of Uga, eliminating the walls and planters in front of its facade. Guadalupe has denounced that the "destroyed elements possess heritage values and will ask for explanations and responsibilities" in the next plenary session.
Guadalupe has "strongly denounced the lack of transparency" of the government group, pointing out that "the residents of the town were not previously informed about the plans to remodel the square." This "sudden and drastic transformation has generated uncertainty and discomfort among the residents of Uga and other towns in the municipality," who have expressed their "outrage at what they consider an outrage against one of the most emblematic spaces in the town."
Likewise, the socialist councilwoman added that "the destruction of heritage elements not only devalues the public space by eliminating characteristics that made it unique and distinctive, but it is a lack of respect for the people, who have cared for and preserved the space over the years as part of the cultural legacy of past generations."
"The city council has the responsibility to protect and preserve our cultural heritage for future generations and defend the elements that represent our identity. This action demonstrates a lack of commitment to the conservation of the historical and cultural legacy of Yaiza," she concludes.
