The PSOE denounces that it is intended to extend the "agony" of the Costa Teguise gardens

Marcos Bergaz criticizes that Betancort's government has initiated a process "to extend the current gardening contract, which they consider insufficient, until the end of 2022, when they have grown tired of announcing a new service"

The PSOE has urged the government of Teguise to "do its homework" with the gardens and green areas of Costa Teguise, which they consider to "suffer from the bad decisions of a government that has been announcing improvements that never arrive for years."

To the complaints made from the socialist ranks, the PSOE affirms that "continuous complaints from neighbors and other entities are added, as recently transferred to public opinion by the Union for the Conservation of Costa Teguise (UCCT), showing their concern for the numerous specimens of palm trees dead or affected by various pests in the main tourist town of the municipality".

In the opinion of the socialists, the situation has worsened "due to the erroneous decisions of the government of the nationalist Oswaldo Betancort, who months ago refused to invest 350,000 euros from a subsidy from the Cabildo of Lanzarote, granted in 2017, for the improvement of the green areas of Costa Teguise, diverting it - after not executing it in three years - to another action that has nothing to do with gardens, palm trees and the environment: the paving of streets".

Furthermore, according to Bergaz, “despite the announcements of a new contract for the maintenance of gardens and green areas, announced for years, the truth is that they have initiated the process for granting a second extension of the current contract, when the same government has been saying that it is insufficient for the needs of the municipality”.

The socialist group has been demanding measures since the beginning of the mandate to solve the ¨agony¨ of the green areas of Costa Teguise. “Without going any further, in the last plenary session we asked about the surprise that decree 1138/2021 of the mayor's office held, when initiating the process for the application and execution of the second extension of the garden contract, clearly insufficient for the needs of the municipality as recognized by the government of Oswaldo Betancort himself,” says Bergaz.

“If the extension is accepted and formalized, the current contract will be extended until October 31, 2022 and for an amount of 824,682.76 euros plus 57,682.78 euros of IGIC, when they have grown tired of saying that the solution to the gardens and green areas would come from a new contract that is still waiting for this government,” adds the socialist.

“To this decision that we do not share, we must add the lack of actions of pure logic, such as the removal of dry palm trees, many of them even topped, which serve as sources of pests, and which are not among the priorities to alleviate the state of the green areas and gardens of the municipality, with images that cry out to heaven; or the correct pruning of palm trees whose leaves hinder the races or walks of residents and tourists through the town of Costa Teguise,” points out the councilor.

“This government for years seems to be content with patching up the gardens, green areas and palm grove, instead of betting on turning it into one of the attractions of our municipality, as they were in times past,” concludes the socialist mayor.
