The PSOE of Lanzarote demands from Oswaldo Betancort the dismissal of Ángel Vázquez at the head of the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism and the immediate call for an extraordinary plenary session to provide explanations on the case and the actions taken by the Presidency.
The socialists accuse Betancort of "hiding behind the Popular Party and trying to transfer to his government partner a political responsibility that he should assume as president".
The deputy spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Cabildo, Ariagona González, recalls that it was the media who reported that Vázquez's son had obtained a permanent position in the Tourist Centers in a procedure whose final resolution was signed by the minister himself. After learning this information, the PSOE demanded his immediate dismissal on October 1st and requested explanations from Betancort.
The PSOE requests an extraordinary plenary session
"Betancort must convene an extraordinary plenary session and explain what he knew about this procedure, what actions he has taken, and why he keeps Ángel Vázquez in office. The citizens have the right to know what happened, and the president has the political obligation to face them," states González.
For the socialist spokesperson, referring the Popular Party to act shows that Betancort "continues to avoid exercising his functions". "The president of the Cabildo is Oswaldo Betancort. Every day he keeps Ángel Vázquez in office, he is making a decision for which he must answer. He cannot act as if what happens in his government were an external matter," she adds.
González emphasizes that the PSOE's demand for political responsibility was made as soon as the facts became known, regardless of the legal consequences that may be determined. "Betancort has known our request since October 1st. He has had time to act and provide explanations. Continuing to wait for the PP to solve the problem prolongs a situation that he himself is allowing," she maintains.
The socialist spokesperson also refers to the president's statements about the lack of work of some ministers in his government. "It is curious that Betancort complains that there are ministers who do not work as if he had just discovered who runs the Cabildo. Perhaps it should be reminded that he is the president. If he knows they do not work and keeps them in their responsibilities, he will have to explain what he is doing," she ironically states.
In González's opinion, both situations reflect the same way of acting: "He points to his advisors, questions his partners, and asks others to make decisions, while he tries to stay out of everything."
The PSOE insists that the dismissal of Ángel Vázquez and the call for the extraordinary plenary session "cannot be postponed any longer." "Citizens deserve explanations and decisions. Oswaldo Betancort must stop hiding behind the PP and finally assume the responsibility of the position he holds," concludes Ariagona González.
