The socialists assert that this situation "demonstrates a serious lack of institutional responsibility in the face of a situation of particular importance for one of the island's productive sectors."

The PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) of Lanzarote has denounced this Wednesday the "prolonged silence" of the president of the Cabildo (Island Council), Oswaldo Betancort, following the loss of the concession for the fish processing industry in Puerto Naos, a key infrastructure for the island's fishing sector.

"More than 72 hours after this fact became known, the president of the Island Council still has not offered any public explanation," which, in the opinion of the PSOE, "demonstrates a serious lack of institutional responsibility in the face of a situation of special importance for one of the island's productive sectors. He has not been able to offer explanations either to the fishing sector or to the public as a whole."

The Secretary-General of the PSOE in Lanzarote and Member of Parliament, María Dolores Corujo, has demanded that the president "break his silence and provide explanations immediately": "The loss of this concession is not a minor incident. It is a serious negligence that directly affects the present and future of the fishing sector. Oswaldo Betancort cannot continue to act as if nothing has happened here. He has an obligation to step up and explain what has happened.”

Corujo recalled that the Socialist Group has already requested the urgent appearance of the president of the Cabildo in the next plenary session, where all pertinent explanations will be demanded of him.

"We are not talking about a procedure without consequences. We are talking about a fundamental infrastructure for the local economy, which has been lost due to a lack of diligence. The public deserves to know what has happened and what measures the Cabildo plans to adopt to prevent the damage from being even greater," he continues.

The PSOE warns that "this episode is not an isolated case, but a new example of a way of governing based on propaganda and improvisation, instead of responsibility and serious public management."

"They claim to defend what is ours, but they are shamelessly dismantling the pillars that support the primary sector. They do not pay aid to livestock farmers, they do not guarantee water to farmers, and now they are allowing an essential infrastructure for fishing to be lost. Lanzarote does not need slogans: it needs commitment and responsibility," Corujo concluded.
