The PSOE of Lanzarote has criticized the lack of foresight of the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands in the face of the episode of intense rains experienced this Saturday on the island, after the alert was not activated until 5:00 p.m., when numerous incidents had already occurred.

The socialist formation regrets that only a pre-alert situation was decreed during the morning, despite the fact that the forecasts pointed to widespread and persistent rains. "Action was taken late. The population should have been warned earlier and emergency resources should have been activated sooner," said the insular deputy secretary of the PSOE and also councilor in the Arrecife City Council, Cristina Duque.

Duque recalled that "shameful situations were experienced in different parts of the island, with flooded streets, affected homes, businesses that have suffered damage and roads with pools of water that put people's safety at risk." In this sense, she has shown her concern about the recurrence of this type of episode without effective prevention and rapid response measures being adopted.

The socialists denounce that the lack of coordination and the absence of planning by CC and PP once again reveal their inability to manage emergency situations. "It's a good thing we haven't had to regret personal injuries, but we can't continue to rely on luck. We need responsibility, planning and resources to face episodes that, unfortunately, will become more and more frequent due to climate change," she warned.

The socialist deputy secretary has made special mention of the situation experienced in the island's capital, criticizing the management of the Arrecife municipal government and recalling that in two years they have allocated more than 18 million euros to parties, "while the city continues to collapse with each heavy rain and many families see how their neighborhoods and livelihoods are totally affected."

The PSOE of Lanzarote has announced that they will demand the appropriate explanations from both the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands about the reasons for the delay in activating the alert and the lack of foresight that has exposed citizens to avoidable situations.
