The PSOE of Lanzarote has demanded that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, publicly explain the reason why he has not resolved the contract for the Amavir residences, despite the "serious breaches and deficiencies that have become known in recent weeks and that directly affect the care, safety, and dignity of the elderly residents".
The spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, has pointed out that Betancort and Marciano Acuña "cannot continue to limit themselves to remaining silent while information of enormous gravity accumulates regarding the functioning of socio-health resources".
“We want to know what else has to happen for Oswaldo Betancort to intervene. Deficiencies in food, reduction of rations, coexistence of elderly people with profiles not compatible with a geriatric center, lack of specialized follow-up, and episodes that would have compromised safety within the resource itself have become known. The question is very clear: why has no action been taken on the contract?”, stated González.
“We are talking about a public contract and elderly people in a situation of dependency. If the Cabildo knew about these deficiencies and did not act, we are facing a profoundly worrying political passivity,” he/she/it has pointed out.
Ariagona González reproached that Oswaldo Betancort and Marciano Acuña have refused to promote an investigation committee to clarify what happened at Amavir. “What the president of the Cabildo cannot do is look the other way and hide information while families wonder if their elders are receiving the attention they deserve. The obligation of Oswaldo Betancort and Marciano Acuña is not to protect the company, but to protect the resident people,” she stressed.
“Every day of silence increases the concern. The elderly of Lanzarote deserve something much more serious than silence, delay, and permanent protection for non-compliant companies. They deserve an institution that is on their side,” concluded Ariagona González.
