Larry Álvarez, Secretary of Organization and Communication of the Popular Party in the Canary Islands, denounced this Monday in a statement the "impotence, improvisation and incompetence demonstrated" by the Executive in the management of the "worst humanitarian crisis in our history", a "failure" in which, in his opinion, "the Government of the Canary Islands has accompanied him, co-responsible for its support for the massive and extraordinary regularization of immigrants in 2005, which is the origin of the call effect that is overwhelming us".
Álvarez described as "unacceptable" the "signs of resignation" of the Vice President María Teresa Fernández de La Vega, who from Paraguay directed the message that the Government is doing what is necessary and that the effects of its policy will be seen in the medium term. "From afar, it is easy to ask for patience, but the Canarians have been waiting for two years for security promises that are not fulfilled, while the Government has turned the Islands into a floating red carpet of welcome to the mafias, with its policy of regularization and comforts for illegal immigrants, as reckless for the interests of the Islands as it is unfair to those who come legally to work in Spain," said the popular spokesman.
The populars ask themselves "what does Fernández de La Vega have to offer the Canarians from Paraguay" and "why are the president and the Canarian minister, who are on vacation in the Islands, hiding from the problem. Don't they think the worst humanitarian crisis in our history is serious enough to set foot on the ground and offer concrete solutions to the Canarians? Would they do the same in the face of an emergency situation declared in another Spanish region? They have been on vacation from the real problems of the Canary Islands for two years".
"The effects of this Government's policy," said the popular spokesman, "we are already seeing every day, with the constant arrival of boats. They do not fall from the sky, this Government has called them with its irresponsible, unilateral and reckless massive regularization, with announcements such as that of Mr. Caldera, who has just promised a job to illegal immigrants who are released after the retention period established by law, or with boasts of false humanitarianism such as Spanish ships rescuing boats, which are transmitting to the mafias the idea that we are not only willing to welcome all their expeditions, but that we will go out to look for them, if they have problems and cannot arrive".
In this sense, the PP criticizes "the perverse inversion of priorities in which the PSOE has fallen", whose regional deputy secretary, Francisco Hernández Spínola, said this Saturday that the Government "will continue working to save human lives" to give a "dignified treatment" to the immigrants who manage to arrive.
