The Government group of the Haría City Council has expressed its "deep regret" after the death, this Wednesday, of Javier Reyes Acuña at the age of 97. The Municipal Corporation has conveyed its "most sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones, in addition to decreeing two days of mourning in his memory."
The Council informs that the funeral chapel is installed in the Municipal Funeral Home of Haría, while the funeral mass will be held this Wednesday, February 21 at 6:30 p.m., in the Parish of Our Lady of the Incarnation in Haría.
"Today is a very sad day for our municipality as we have lost a great man, a person very loved by all and who has contributed, enormously, to shaping the history of Haría for decades through his professional career and his photographs full of truth and humanity," the Council highlighted.
Javier Reyes Acuña, a native of Haría and passionate about the world of photography, was named Favorite Son of Haría in June 2023 and, among other well-deserved distinctions he received, the 'Haría Award 2005' stands out, the highest award given by the Institution, in gratitude for his invaluable contribution to the culture and heritage of the Island.
The veteran photographer worked as an administrative assistant in the town hall and in a bank, among other professions, he also dedicated himself to his passion, photography. In fact, he was the first photographer who began to regularly go to the island of La Graciosa to work at weddings, baptisms and other commissions. Through his camera he not only reflected the festive atmosphere but also captured the tireless work of the residents in their daily tasks, as well as in fishing and in the fields.
The work of Reyes Acuña reaches 16,000 photographs that are collected in the Data Center of Lanzarote due to its high historical value as they reflect what the Island was like in the mid-twentieth century.
