The councils of Tenerife and La Palma have changed governments this Wednesday, after the motions of censure presented against Coalición Canaria in both institutions prospered. In the case of Tenerife, the presidency has been in the hands of the socialist Pedro Martín, who has had the favorable votes of the PSOE, Ciudadanos and Sí Podemos.

As for La Palma, the new president is the popular Mariano Hernández, by virtue of the agreement sealed between the councilors of the PP and the PSOE, which did not have the approval of the national leadership of the Popular Party. In fact, the National Committee of Rights and Guarantees of the formation agreed this Tuesday to his expulsion, although it has not managed to prevent the motion of censure from going ahead.

Meanwhile, in Tenerife, Coalición Canaria has tried this Wednesday to prevent the vote alleging a supposed incompatibility of one of the censoring councilors, who was elected by Podemos and works in an island public company. The secretary of the Cabildo has responded that there was no such incompatibility, but even so the president of the age table, who belongs to CC, has tried to postpone the plenary session until next week. However, after the complaints of the parties that supported the motion of censure, a meeting of spokespersons and technicians of the institution has been held, in which it has been agreed to continue the session and the motion of censure has ended up prospering.

Controversy in Ciudadanos

In Tenerife, the agreement has also had consequences for two of the censoring councilors, in this case from Ciudadanos, who were suspended as a precautionary measure from militancy after registering the motion of censure. From the leadership of Cs they maintain that they had given the order not to support a motion of censure together with Podemos, but the councilors respond that what they could not do was govern together with the purple formation, which is not going to happen, since Podemos has supported the motion but will not join the government.

These two motions of censure have left Coalición Canaria out of the government of the seven island councils, where they have also lost the Government of the Canary Islands and some of the main town halls.
