Jameos del Agua will host a training day to raise awareness of deafness among the entity's workers next Friday, May 7. “We want them to offer adapted responses to guarantee an inclusive experience for people who visit the spaces created by César Manrique with some degree of hearing disability,” explains the CEO of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers, Benjamín Perdomo.
Organized by the Association of Deaf People of Arrecife and Lanzarote (APSAL), the professionals of the Tourist Centers will receive a training session on the origin, types and existing technical aids to face a disability that affects more than 5% of the world population, some 360 million people. Later, they will participate in a basic sign language workshop.
According to a statement sent by the Centers, the objective of APSAL is to achieve social inclusion by and for all, in order to improve the social welfare of deaf or hearing-impaired people and their families, promote Sign Language, and achieve full equality and participation between the deaf and hearing community.
In this regard, it is pointed out that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), "deafness ranks third among the pathologies that involve years of life suffering from a disability." "This implies a challenge both in the actions that must be carried out to prevent this pathology and in the implementation of effective treatments and pertinent measures to improve the quality of life of the people who suffer from it," it concludes.
