The General Director of Transportation of the Canary Islands Government, María Fernández, has summoned representatives of the island council and the seven municipalities of the island to Lanzarote this Wednesday morning, to present the process of drafting what will be the first Canary Island law on sustainable mobility

The director, together with her team from the Intermodal service, has chosen the island of Lanzarote to start the meetings of this second phase of citizen participation in the future Canary Island law. "A regulation that we want to be as participatory as possible. We like to talk a lot about open government, about participatory government, but little is put into practice and, precisely, this is what we want to achieve with this round of meetings in each and every one of the islands."

María Fernández recalled that the citizen participation process was opened last March, and that it concluded barely a month ago with the participation of 35 groups from all over the archipelago. “In this second phase we come into contact not only with the local administration, whether in island councils or municipalities, since, after all, they are the ones who will have to deal with a new regulation the most, but also with tables, workshops with citizens and professionals. We want this effort to lead us to have, in the middle of next year, a draft that we can take out again for participation and have, predictably at the end of next year, a text that we can take to parliamentary debate and approve it before the end of the legislature," Fernández highlighted.

For his part, the Councilor for Transportation and Mobility of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas, pointed out that "today I had the opportunity to participate in the inter-administrative table convened by the General Director of Transportation of the Canary Islands Government, María Fernández, a key meeting to learn about the process of drafting the Canary Island Sustainable Mobility Law, which represents a crucial step towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly future in Lanzarote.”

“From the Cabildo de Lanzarote, we are committed to working hand in hand with the seven municipalities of the island and the Canary Islands Government to implement this law and move towards more inclusive and sustainable mobility for all. This type of initiative brings us closer and closer to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, with the well-being of our citizens and respect for our environment as a priority," he added.

To conclude, the General Director of Transportation insisted that "we are going to take the time necessary in this participation phase. We will hold meetings with the more than 90 agents involved that we have identified on all the islands, with the aim that it be a participatory law and not an imposition of a few on many others, but that it reflects the Canary Island identity and that it is really useful.”
