The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, has reported on the actions that the first island institution will carry out in defense of animal welfare and protection, highlighting among them the request to the Government of the Canary Islands to modify the Animal Welfare Law, which may be supported by citizens through the page www.niuntimplemas.org

“Actions as reprehensible as the one that occurred in recent dates, move us and outrage us, but we cannot just stay angry”, explained the president, who believes that we must go further and take measures that contribute to preventing this type of situation from recurring.

Thus, Corujo has announced that she will take an initiative to the Plenary so that the Cabildo requests the Government and the Parliament of the Canary Islands to update the Animal Welfare Law, a commitment assumed in the last legislature that the previous regional government did not fulfill.

“Law 8/1991 is still in force in the Canary Islands and the level of public awareness regarding animal welfare has far outstripped this regulation, which needs to be updated as soon as possible”, explained the president.

Regardless of the unavoidable regulatory changes, Corujo believes it is essential that society itself internalizes, more and more, the ethical values capable of guaranteeing respect and care for the animals with whom we share our lives.

“They are not the ones who need us, we are the ones who need the company and the unconditional affection they give us”, said the president, who has announced that in the coming days an online petition will be enabled so that citizens can echo this request to update the Animal Welfare Law.

Likewise, the president has reported on the start of an awareness campaign in this regard: “Much more important than toughening the rule is contributing to extending the awareness that animals are not mere objects, they are beings with the capacity to feel and when we recognize that condition, and we respect it, we become better people”, concluded Corujo.
