The Plenary Session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote unanimously approved this Thursday a motion presented by the Coalición Canaria Group to express institutional support for the educational project promoted in the Naos area, in Arrecife, as opposed to the possible installation of a low-cost gas station in that same location.
The motion, which was defended in plenary session, underlines the strategic value of converting this port enclave into a key training space linked to the blue economy, sustainability and maritime-port development. The agreement reached includes urging the Port Authority to support the public and educational use of the plot, as well as the consolidation of this space as a center of opportunities for the island's youth.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has valued the consensus reached and highlighted "the importance of all political forces rowing in the same direction to defend a project of the future that connects with training, qualification and opportunities for young people."
Betancort recalled that "the Naos educational project is part of a clear island strategy, which has the support of the educational community, business organizations and groups in the maritime sector, such as the Fishermen's Association or the Chamber of Commerce."
For her part, the Minister of Education, Ascensión Toledo, thanked "the Corporation's sensitivity to a project that not only promotes knowledge and professional training, but also responds to an urgent and strategic social need to diversify Lanzarote's production model."
"Lanzarote cannot afford to continue losing educational and economic opportunities due to decisions that prioritize private benefit over the general interest," added Toledo.
The educational project in Naos contemplates the creation of a higher and professional training center adapted to the needs of emerging sectors, with special focus on the maritime, technological and sustainable environment. The approved motion also points out that the initiative has the support of entities such as the University Foundation of Las Palmas, the Tourist Federation of Lanzarote, the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa and the Business Confederation of Lanzarote.
