The Cabildo regrets that the PP has joined the "disinformation campaign" on the need to declare Lanzarote saturated with tourism

Corujo: “We have never heard them talk about the negative impact of the Papagayo Arena or the skeletons of Costa Teguise, which do damage our image as a destination”

The president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, has lamented that the Popular Party has joined the "disinformation campaign" on the need to declare Lanzarote saturated with tourism.

Corujo has reaffirmed her statements, made at the press conference in which the work carried out at FITUR was reported, in which she pointed out that Lanzarote's great challenges involve limiting tourism growth as a prior step to a process of degrowth, which allows reducing the accommodation offer while maintaining, and even improving, the income produced by those who visit the island.

“These statements bother those who continue to think that more development is the same as more beds and have put their spokespersons to sow fear with a non-existent alarm in the British market, sheltering, as always, in the “image of Lanzarote”, Corujo has reproached, pointing out: “However, we have never heard them talk about the negative impact of the Papagayo Arena or the skeletons of Costa Teguise, which do damage our image as a destination”.

For the president, the Popular Party's follow-up is regrettable because they know perfectly well that this type of debate is maintained, and with great intensity, in the main tourist destinations.

“The Balearic Islands, the Costa del Sol or Barcelona are constantly in the news for their attempts to limit the growth of the vehicle fleet associated with tourism, rationalize the arrival of cruises or control the growth of vacation rentals without generating any reputational crisis in the issuing markets. On the contrary, that a destination strives to guarantee its conservation is always good news for those who visit it”, Corujo explained.

“We are going to continue promoting the debate on the limits to growth, no matter how much they try to gag us with the ghost of fear of damage to the image of Lanzarote, and no matter who it hurts, the only viable model has to be based on social and environmental sustainability”, she concluded.
