The Cabildo of Lanzarote has annulled the announcement of the Approval of the Land Management Plan for Natural Resources of the Los Volcanes Natural Park (PORN) in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas for "being incomplete".
This past Wednesday, September 16, the PORN was published by the island's Cabildo in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas and stipulated that the document would come into effect 15 business days after its complete publication. The publication represented the final step of a procedure that culminated politically last July with the approval of the PORN by the Plenary Session of the Cabildo.
This is the first major document of territorial and environmental management initiated, processed, and fully completed during the current term, and it will allow the full legal effectiveness of the Los Volcanes Natural Park to be restored.
Legal certainty and response to El Golfo and Yaiza
One of the main changes incorporated by the PORN is the recognition of El Golfo as a consolidated urban nucleus within territorial planning, a historical demand from the residents of this town in Yaiza. The document allows numerous property owners to advance in the procedures to legally register their properties and regularize their situation in accordance with current regulations.
The Plan also includes modifications in Yaiza aimed at facilitating the availability of land for future public facilities, including actions related to the expansion of the health center and the improvement of municipal sports facilities. Likewise, certain lands are reclassified from rural land for natural protection to rural land for rural settlement.
A procedure initiated in 2024
The processing began with the draft being taken into consideration by the Governing Council in June 2024. From then on, the document was submitted for public information and consultation with the affected administrations. During this process, five objections were received, which were analyzed and answered, in addition to the corresponding reports from various bodies.
Before its plenary approval, the definitive proposal was also submitted for consultation to the Directorate General of the Coast and the Sea and the Ministry of Defense. Following the considerations gathered in these reports, the corresponding modifications were made to configure the definitive document that was submitted to the Plenary.
The PORN establishes criteria for the conservation, protection, restoration, and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as the determinations that must be taken into account in the development of the spatial planning and management instruments. Los Volcanes Natural Park covers more than 10,158 hectares distributed among Tinajo, Yaiza, and Tías.
La Geria, also in processing
At the same time, the Cabildo maintains the participation process for the Special Plan for the Protected Landscape (PEPP) of La Geria open. The deadline for submitting suggestions will remain open until next September 25, so farmers, winegrowers, winemakers, landowners, residents, and groups linked to the area can still consult the documentation and submit their contributions.
The Special Plan establishes different levels of protection and planning for this area. Among them is the Traditional Use Zone, with more than 2,877 hectares, where practically all the agricultural and wine-growing activity of La Geria is concentrated.
