The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has pioneered the implementation of microwave myoma ablation in the archipelago, an innovative technique that allows this pathology to be treated with a minimally invasive procedure as an alternative to conventional surgery.
The Gynecology and Obstetrics service thus incorporates a new therapeutic resource that expands the treatment options available to patients to date. The service's physicians have successfully performed three interventions on patients, with satisfactory results, managing to reduce the size of the myomas and improve associated symptoms.
Microwave ablation is a minimally invasive medical technique that uses energy (microwaves) to apply heat directly to the myoma, causing its cells to be destroyed in a controlled manner. It is indicated for women of reproductive age who present with heavy bleeding and infertility secondary to myomas, after prior evaluation by a specialist.
The head of the service, Javier Cuadrado, points out that this procedure is a significant advance, as it allows certain myomas to be treated in which other treatments are not as effective. The technique is performed without surgical incisions, promoting rapid recovery and reducing possible complications associated with traditional surgery.
In this way, the Molina Orosa Hospital advances in conservative treatments for uterine fibroids and reaffirms its commitment to innovation, personalized medicine, and the continuous improvement of women's healthcare.
The incorporation of new techniques and therapeutic resources is part of the growth and consolidation process of the Gynecology and Obstetrics service in recent years. Currently, the Molina Orosa service has 19 specialists, the highest number recorded to date, and 11 nursing care technicians. Three doctors and three nursing technicians have been added to the staff compared to 2023, which has allowed for an expansion of healthcare capacity and a comprehensive response to the ever-increasing demand for specialized care in women's health.
This evolution is also reflected in the activity data, especially in the significant growth recorded in consultations.
More healthcare capacity, greater activity
In fact, external Gynecology consultations have experienced growth close to one hundred percent compared to 2023. During the first semester of this year, a total of 8,547 consultations were attended compared to the 4,326 registered in the same period of 2023, which represents an increase of 97.6 percent in these three years.
The growth is especially noticeable in follow-up consultations, which went from 2,402 to 5,870, representing an increase of more than 144 percent. First consultations went from 1,462 to 2,263, 54.8 percent more, largely thanks to the boost from the Plan Activa Canarias.
In the field of Obstetrics, consultations also experienced positive evolution. The number of follow-up consultations increased by 82.7 percent, going from 676 in the first semester of 2023 to 1,235 in the same period of 2026. First consultations stood at 664, compared to the 610 registered three years earlier.
On the other hand, gynecological surgical interventions also increased, specifically those requiring hospitalization by 23.8 percent, with a notable evolution of minimally invasive surgeries such as hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, or resectoscopy. For their part, outpatient surgery remained stable, with 273 procedures compared to the 266 registered in 2023.
The increase in activity is also accompanied by greater hospital activity in Gynecology. Discharges of gynecological patients grew by 54.9 percent, going from 246 in the first semester of 2023 to 381 in 2026.
