The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, on behalf of the entire Island Corporation, has expressed his solidarity with the Moroccan people after the terrible earthquake of magnitude 7 that struck Morocco last night and that has caused, at least, 800 deaths and 600 injuries, according to the country's Ministry of the Interior.
The provinces and cities of Al Hauz, Marrakech, Tarudant, Chichaua and Ouarzazate have been the most affected by the earthquake, with buildings that have collapsed. The epicenter has been located in Ighil (south of the country), 63 kilometers southwest of Marrakech and at a depth of 18 kilometers.
"From the Cabildo of Lanzarote we are working to help in everything we can, activating the appropriate protocol through the Emergency Consortium, and offering residents of the Island information about possible family members affected by this terrible event," said the president.
"I have been able to contact our Geopark Lanzarote staff who were at a UNESCO World Congress in Marrakech and who, fortunately, are in perfect condition and will return home as soon as possible," said Betancort.
The Security and Emergency Consortium has already made itself available to the Government of the Canary Islands so that it, in turn, can coordinate the Islands' device with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs "and thus be able to activate the action protocol that will have, in the first instance, firefighters specialized in collapsed structures and collaborate in the most effective way to find and rescue trapped people," said the head of the area, Francisco Aparicio.
