The Minister of Environment of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Nicolás Saavedra, asks citizens to "protect and care for the island's natural heritage", after the "environmental attack" carried out by two young people on the mountain of El Golfo, who ignored the prohibition of access to this protected area to record a video and spread it on social networks.

"We strongly condemn this type of act and any that involves an aggression against the environment," says Nicolás Saavedra, who recalls that "it is important that everyone becomes aware of the importance of protecting the territory and respecting the laws that are designed for it."

Likewise, the councilor informs that, after the institution's Environment agents received notice of what happened, the Cabildo is working jointly with the State security forces in the identification of the young people in order to open a sanctioning file.

In this regard, the Environment area recalls that Law 4/2017, on Land and Protected Areas of the Canary Islands, contemplates sanctions that can range from 60 to 600,000 euros.

Other tourists also ignored the prohibition

A few days ago, two other tourists also ignored the prohibition and went down to the beach. "It's a total lack of control. We are going to ruin Lanzarote if they don't start controlling it. It happens in El Golfo, on the path delimited to the Los Clicos lake... They ignore the prohibitions. And there is no control of the protected natural spaces," says a reader of La Voz.
