The Cabildo of Lanzarote condemns the brutal attack on a woman in Arrecife

The victim, in serious condition after being stabbed by her ex-partner, receives support from the Emergency Device for Aggressed Women (DEMA) while the alleged aggressor is detained.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, expresses his absolute rejection -and that of the entire Corporation- of the brutal aggression suffered by a woman this Friday, March 7, allegedly at the hands of her ex-partner. The event occurred in a house near El Reducto (Arrecife), precisely on the eve of International Women's Day.

The president of the Cabildo has made a call to all citizens not to remain impassive in the face of this serious social problem. "It is unacceptable that we continue to regret attacks like this in our. From the Cabildo we insist on continuing to add resources to the fight against gender violence and the protection of victims," declared Oswaldo Betancort.

For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, has shown his solidarity with the victim and recalled that "from the Cabildo we continue working to offer care and support to all victims. They are not alone. We have a support network that should be used without fear. We encourage all women who suffer any type of violence to ask for help. On International Women's Day, this unfortunate aggression impacts us even more and requires us all to make greater efforts to end this scourge," Acuña stated.

As La Voz already reported, the victim is in serious condition at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery due to the wound caused by a knife in the neck. The alleged aggressor was arrested shortly after the events, and investigations are ongoing. The Cabildo of Lanzarote has maintained its Emergency Device for Aggressed Women (DEMA) activated since Friday, providing permanent accompaniment to the victim in the General Hospital.

During the year 2024, in Lanzarote, 1,386 calls were registered to the 112 emergency service for the care of women victims of gender violence.

The network of Centers and Services for Attention to Victims of Gender Violence of the Area of Social Welfare and Inclusion of the Cabildo attended to 767 people in the last year.

The Island Institution makes available to all women victims of gender violence resources such as the 112 emergency telephone, available 24 hours a day, the psychological and legal care service, accessible through the Area of Social Welfare and Inclusion; and the shelter for women in situations of risk, with specialized care.

Since January 1, 2003, 1,296 women have been murdered in Spain by their partners or ex-partners. So far in 2025, two women have been murdered, leaving a balance of five orphaned minors in Spain.
