The Cabildo of Lanzarote has been awarded in the Solidarity Awards Grupo Social ONCE Canarias 2025, in the category of Public Administration, for its strong commitment to accessibility, inclusion and social justice through pioneering and structural public policies.

The ceremony, held this Wednesday at the Guiniguada Theater in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, brought together regional authorities, representatives of the third sector and award winners from different categories. The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, collected the recognition on behalf of the entire island institution, stressing that this award is the result of "a collective and determined commitment to putting people at the center of political action."

"This award recognizes a collective commitment. It is the result of the daily work of many people, associations, third sector entities, technicians and professionals who dedicate their efforts to building a more humane and supportive island," said Betancort, who also thanked the work of the councilor Marci Acuña and the staff that structures the Area of Social Welfare and Inclusion of the Cabildo.

ONCE has especially valued the Island Strategy for Accessibility and Inclusion, promoted in these two years of government, as a comprehensive initiative aimed at eliminating physical, social and cultural barriers, consolidating Lanzarote and La Graciosa as "islands of care."

Tangible achievements in two years of management

Regarding this recognition, the island president has highlighted the progress made in terms of inclusion since he assumed the presidency of the Cabildo, including the more than 35 million euros invested in the social agreement for the management of public services aimed at the elderly, people with disabilities and people in situations of dependency. He also spoke of the more than 18 million euros allocated to new social and health infrastructures, with a perspective focused on comprehensive care; or the execution of the Island Accessibility Plan, with a historical allocation of 7.2 million euros, aimed at transforming the territory from an inclusive perspective.

Likewise, Betancort has referred to the consolidation of the island network of care for dependency, promotion of self-directed support, and development of social and cultural programs with a transformative approach; as well as the promotion of mental health, networking with entities in the social field, inclusive employment and the promotion of tourism, leisure and accessible sports.

Finally, Oswaldo Betancort has dedicated the award to people with disabilities, their families, those who care with love, and all the professionals and entities that work day by day for a more just society. "Inclusion is not a passing fad. It is a structural policy. An inalienable legislative mandate and an ethical obligation," he said.
