The Cabildo of Lanzarote has responded to the press release sent by the main opposition party, the PSOE, on Friday morning where they revealed that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, "has lost the funds destined for the Tahíche nursing home, after allowing the agreement on social and healthcare infrastructures signed with the Government of the Canary Islands to expire." The island government, presided over by Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular, has reaffirmed "its firm commitment to improving the island's social and healthcare infrastructure network" and has assured that the construction of the residence will begin next summer.

In a response statement, the Cabildo assured that "despite the obstacles generated by the management of the previous government group, this administration has managed to save a fundamental project for the well-being of the elderly and dependent people on the island."

Thus, it has assured that the Cabildo's Department of Social Welfare and Inclusion "has worked intensively to unblock a situation inherited from the past legislature, where the lack of diligence led to non-compliance with administrative deadlines and the loss of funds destined for essential infrastructures."

The Minister of Social Welfare, Marci Acuña, has been forceful in this regard: “No matter how much some people use demagoguery to confuse citizens, the truth is that starting from scratch we have managed to ensure that this year a construction paralyzed by the inaction of the past term begins. It is unacceptable that those who had the project awarded for four years, and who laid the first stone of the building in May 2021 only to leave in 2023 without even resolving the contract, now accuse this Government group of a problem that they generated. Their lack of management put this vital infrastructure for our elders at risk, and we have had to intervene in record time to resolve the contract and find a new contractor, preventing an essential project from being lost.”

Only that first stone remained

Acuña highlighted that, thanks "to the rapid intervention of the current Government group", they managed to "adopt the necessary measures to redirect the situation and guarantee the viability of the project. In this case, as we previously did with the signing of the Social Agreements to end the war that was maintained with the Third Sector organizations, we have prevented the neglect of the previous administration from harming our citizens. Our commitment is clear: to provide the island with decent and sufficient social and healthcare facilities to meet the growing demand for residential and day care”, the minister stressed.

The construction of the Tahíche Nursing Home represents "a significant advance in the care of the elderly population of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, providing 180 places for people in situations of dependency who require a high level of social and healthcare attention. In addition, this project will have a positive economic impact, generating employment both in the construction phase and in the subsequent operation of the service, with new jobs in the social and healthcare field."
