The Landscape and Food Sovereignty Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Haría have carried out a remarkable intervention of cleaning and landscape recovery in the Salinas de Órzola, located in the northern municipality.
Thanks to Lot 7 of the Farm Recovery Program, promoted by the first Island Corporation and financed through FDCAN funds (Canary Islands Development Fund), several teams of operators have carried out cleaning and waste removal work in this natural space, thus reinforcing the protection of the environment and promoting the revitalization of the island's natural and cultural heritage.
The Councilor for the Environment, Landscape and Food Sovereignty of the Cabildo, Samuel Martín, has stressed the importance of this action, which covered an area of 12,749 square meters and has allowed "to recover the beauty of these salt flats, of high landscape value, which had been suffering from neglect and accumulation of waste for years."
"This protected natural space," added Martín, "is a reflection of our identity, and now, thanks to this collective effort, and in collaboration with the City Council of Haría, we have managed to meet this historical demand of the residents of the north so that the salt flats are kept in good condition."
'Caring for Lanzarote' Program
The action carried out in the Salinas de Órzola is part of the ambitious employment program Caring for Lanzarote and La Graciosa that has been launched by the Cabildo with an investment of more than 12 and a half million euros for the period 2023-2025.
This plan is divided into eight work lots, ranging from maintenance, cleaning and waste removal, to the improvement of different enclaves of the island, such as coastal areas and public spaces and rural environments, also achieving the hiring of 158 people. Likewise, conservation work is also carried out in sensitive and protected areas such as the surroundings of Guatiza or Mala, the Natural Park of Los Volcanes, as well as the natural spaces of La Geria or the Volcán de la Corona, among other places.
For the Cabildo of Lanzarote it is a priority to continue investing in this type of programs that not only beautify our island, but also generate local employment and contribute to environmental balance.
