The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, has accepted before a notary in Madrid the donation of the 70 homes in Valterra, in Arrecife. Corujo signed this Monday the deed of the properties transferred by the Social Institute of the Navy to the Cabildo, to now transfer the ownership to "the 70 legitimate owners of the properties".

Corujo stated that this transfer, demanded for decades by families, has been possible thanks to a complex inter-administrative work deployed during the current term. The procedure sponsored by the current Government group resulted a month ago in the acceptance by the Island Government Council of the donation proposed by the Social Institute of the Navy, where the president was also authorized to sign the public deed of the properties before a notary.

"Now, the Cabildo of Lanzarote will transfer the ownership of the donated assets to those who prove their status as legitimate owners without, therefore, being definitively integrated into the Corporation's assets," said the Cabildo of Lanzarote in a press release.

The president has clarified that "the interested parties have been and will be informed at all times; and also now about the steps to follow in the process of justification and transfer of ownership to each owner".

With their legal rights

Once the deed of the properties has been signed, the Cabildo of Lanzarote will soon begin the procedures to transfer the ownership of the same to their legitimate owners, which will lead to the mandatory registration in their name in the Property Registry of Arrecife.

It should be remembered that the Valterra neighborhood has 200 homes built in 1955 by the Social Institute of the Navy, with the participation of various canneries and for the use of workers as official protection homes.

However, although the State handed over 130 of them to the tenants, a lawsuit was initiated on the other 70 when the three canneries claimed their ownership, so that, until now, the residents have lived in fear of being evicted and without being able to intervene in them as their legal rights are not recognized, something they now acquire.
